Tendon rupture by atorvastatin (SORTIS) and other statins: A 61-year old male complained muscular pain and weakness under physical strain. He had been taking the statins cerivastatin (LIPOBAY; off market) and later atorvastatin (SORTIS) for an extended period of time. A statin-induced myopathy was suspected. Against recommendation from the hospital for drug withdrawal the patient continued to take it and suffered a biceps rupture few months later (NETZWERK report 13.377). Biceps tendon rupture was described in two other patients after prolonged use of atorvastatin, alone or in combination with Ezetimib (EZETROL; 11.589, 13.789). The Federal Institute of Drugs and Medical Products (BfArM) has documented two reports of tendon rupture in connection with atorvastatin and one case each with pravastatin (PRAVASIN u.a.) and simvastatin (ZOCOR and others; BfArM: letter of 19 July 2005). Tendon rupture as a possible adverse reaction is only mentioned in the product information for PRAVASIN (Bristol-Myers Squibb: PRAVASIN Product Information; up-date Jan. 2005). A group effect for statins is suspected.
