A quarter billion euros worth of swine flu vaccines to be trashed: Twenty-nine million doses of the swine flu vaccine PANDEMRIX are expiring. Thus, at €6 per dose for the poorly tolerated adjuvant and €1 for the antigen, plus VAT (a-t 2009; 40: 85-7), vaccines having a purchase price of a quarter billion euros must be destroyed. As a gesture of good will, the manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline waived the delivery and payment fees for 16 million of the originally ordered 50 million vaccine doses. Only around 5 to 6 million people were vaccinated. The communications fiasco that occurred at that time (a-t 2009; 40: 93-5) has now been overcome to a certain degree (ZYLKA-MENHORN, V.: Dt. Ärztebl. 2010; 107: A850-5), likewise the reasons for the misestimates for the vaccine orders - declaration of the pandemic by the WHO which was advised by experts with conflicts of interest (a-t 2010; 41: 59-60), time pressure from suppliers for setting delivery quantities, the supposed need for a two-time vaccination, lacking public oversight (inflexible secret agreements which were made public by the a-t [a-t 2009; 40: 110]), and not least the relatively mild progression of the swine flu which became evident early on. At the same time as the imminent disposal operation, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is now recommending no longer using PANDEMRIX in individuals under the age of 20 due to a 6- to 13-times greater risk of narcolepsy in children and adolescents (a-t 2011; 42: 24), unless trivalent vaccines, which all now contain antigens for the swine flu (a-t 2011; 42: 71) are not available (EMA: press release of 27 July 2011). This type of scenario appears to be extremely unlikely, -Ed.
