Finasteride (PROPECIA and others): additional warning in France

In France increasing reference will be made to the risks of finasteride (PROPECIA, generics; a-t 1997; No. 10: 106-7, 1999; No. 2: 22-3 and others) for the treatment of male androgenetic alopecia. Its use is only approved in early stages in men aged between 18 and 41. From 28 April 2023 at the latest, all of the packs must display a warning in a box on the front highlighting the harmful psychiatric and sexual effects of the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (see a t 2016; 47: 16 and 2018; 49: 71-2) (1). A QR code links to sites for patients, prescribers and pharmacists (2) providing information about the severe harmful effects such as sexual disorders that can last for an indefinite period of time, anxiety, depression and suicidal tendencies, among others. A video aims to improve the reporting of adverse effects. Since we feel that the risk/benefit ratio is negative, we continue to advise against the use of finasteride to treat androgenetic alopecia, -Ed.
